Human beings by their very nature are afraid of evil and darkness, whether they boldly accept it or not. And to face this fear, they always seek hope, as hope is the only thing in this world more powerful than fear. Diwali has always been a harbinger of hope, as it is a reminder that in the end, good conquers evil. And it is the reason that diwali has been and always will be one of the most important festivals of Hindu community.

Diwali is also known as the festival of lights, and shall we add, it is quite rightly called so. From times immemorial, light has been seen as a symbol of hope. And also, diwali is just another term for deepawali (true Hindu name of the festival) which translates directly to ‘deepo ki awali’ (a sequence of lamps/lights).

Diwali is celebrated in the ‘Kartik’ month of Hindu calendar every year. Generally, it falls in October/November. It is celebrated on the ‘amavasya’ (darkest night) of the Kartik month and ironically it is never dark on this night as people light up lamps, candles and lights everywhere. Diwali dates back to the Treta yug, to the day of the return of Lord Rama, Goddess Sita, and Lord Laxman returned from their exile of 14 years to Ayodhya and people of Ayodhya lit lamps to welcome them and also to light up the dark night of amavas.

Diwali is an ongoing 5-day long festival where each day has its own significance and story. Diwali is also celebrated in religions other than Hinduism such as Sikhism, Jainism; and although the stories differ, the central message is the same – “Victory of light over darkness, good over evil”. Diwali is celebrated on the third day of the five day long festivities. Along with the return of Lord Rama, the day of diwali is also observed as the day on which Goddess Laxmi chose Lord Vishnu as her husband. So, people also observe Laxmi pooja on this day and tidy up their houses for Goddess Laxmi so that she may arrive to their house and bless them.
